Stem cells from human umbilical-cord blood may replace bone marrow as an effective treatment for hepatitis and other liver-related diseases.
Scientists from Spain’s University of Granada and the University of Leon have discovered that stem-cell transplants in rats caused an improvement in liver function. The treatment might avert the need for a liver transplant.
Dawn Vargo, bioethics analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said: "Studies like this continue to confirm that human stem cells from ethical sources — like umbilical-cord blood — are the best option for treating disease."
