Good News: Alaska Churches Can Claim Housing Exemptions

The Alaska Superior Court recently upheld a 2006 state law that allows tax exemptions for church-owned facilities that house religious-school teachers.

The American Civil Liberties Union had sued in an effort to remove Anchorage Baptist Temple’s tax exemptions, claiming they violated the state and federal constitutions. Judge Mike Spaan ruled the law is constitutional and includes property used for educational purposes.

"This is a great victory for the children and families of Alaska,” said Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, which represented the church. “These children living in remote areas will benefit from the opportunity to attend a local religious school where a qualified teacher will give them the key to open the door to their future."
