In Connecticut, conservative young adults are making their voices heard on issues like abortion and abstinence education.
When Peter Wolfgang became head of the Family Institute of Connecticut (FIC), which is associated with Focus on the Family, one of his first goals was to reach out to young conservatives.
“Our concern was for the future of the pro-life and pro-value movement in Connecticut," he said, "not just tomorrow, but 20, 50 years from now.”
That’s when he met Leah Thomas, a twentysomething working in campus ministry who had the same desire — to reach a lost generation. So they formed a new wing of FIC — iFIC.
“Our generation has been sold this lie since the '60s or '70s,” Thomas said. "We’re still growing. I think the momentum’s picking up."
The group's first target was a sex-education bill in the state Legislature. An iFIC member was one of the first to address lawmakers.
“She had all her facts and figures about Planned Parenthood," Wolfgang said, "about how it is the largest abortion provider in the nation, about their financial interest in peddling so called sex-education to the children.”
The bill was killed.
But there's more work to do, Thomas said. Next up: Same-sex "marriage."
iFIC is hoping to work with other youth and campus ministries.
