Good News: Subway Re-Launches Essay Contest to Include Home-Schoolers
Following an outcry from home-schoolers and their parents, the Subway restaurant chain has launched a second essay contest for elementary students — and this time home-schoolers are eligible.
Subway created an essay contest earlier this year for elementary students who attend public, private or parochial schools. Because the grand prize was athletic equipment for the winner’s school, Subway excluded home-schoolers.
“We sincerely apologize to anyone who feels excluded by our current essay contest,” Jeremie Roche, a Subway spokesman, said at the time.
Candi Cushman, education analyst for Focus on the Family Action, commended Subway for its quick response.
“It’s encouraging to see home-schoolers receiving the respect and equal opportunity they deserve,” she said. “Given the widespread success of home-schoolers on academic-achievement tests, it only makes sense that they should be welcome as a valued and highly successful part of the education community.”
