U.S. Exports Dangerous Abortion Pill

An estimated 7 percent of women require a surgical abortion later.

Women around the world — particularly those in countries with strong abortion laws — are buying do-it-yourself abortion pills from an online U.S. organization.

A recent report found 7 percent of women who obtained RU-486 online required a surgical abortion afterward.

Joe Pojman, executive director of Texas Alliance for Life, said Web sites like this make a bad situation worse.

“It means probably an increase in the number of abortions," he said. “Women are likely to be harmed — sometimes grievously harmed — by trying to self-abort.”

Dr. Gene Rudd, associate executive director of the Christian Medical Association, said the serious side effects of abortion are being overlooked.

"We know there’s some serious side effects that are life-threatening for women who take this (pill)," he said. "And now we’re allowing them to have it unsupervised.”
