Good News: Bush Works to Protect Pro-Life Health Care Workers
Family News in Focus
Programs receiving federal aid would have to respect moral convictions of workers.
The Bush administration wants all health programs seeking federal aid to promise — in writing — they will respect health care providers' moral convictions. The proposal would prevent state and local governments from discriminating against hospitals and individuals that oppose abortion.
Dawn Vargo, bioethics analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said this will help "ensure that health care providers have the freedom of conscience to be able to practice according to the dictates of their conscience.”
Dr. David Stevens, executive director of the Christian Medical Association, said the move was overdue.
"It’s high time the will of the people, as expressed by over 35 years of laws passed by Congress, finally be translated into practical health care regulations," he said.
