Abortion Kills Majority of Down Syndrome Babies in Spain, Canada

In Spain, 9 of 10 preborn babies diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted, according to the country's National Association for the Defense of the Right to Conscientious Objection. In Canada, 8 in 10 preborn babies with Down syndrome are aborted. The numbers are similar in the U.S.

The law in Spain specifically bans abortion of preborn babies with "serious physical or mental defects," including Down syndrome.

Prenatal diagnostic tests are combining with abortion to nearly wipe out children with disabilities, according to the Spain group.

Carrie Gordon Earll, senior bioethics analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said: "Prenatal screening should not be used as a means to abortion, but rather to help parents be prepared to welcome a disabled child."
