Veterinarians have been using adult stem cells to regrow muscles, tendons and bones on injured horses.
Several racehorses have shown significant improvement following the injection of adult stem cells into the injured sites. One horse is participating in the Olympics, and another is a prize-winning jumper.
Researchers are seeing similar success in humans, including the treatment of spinal-cord injuries, heart disease and cancer.
"Adult stem cells have become successful and commonplace in treating what would be career-ending injuries in racehorses," said Dawn Vargo, bioethics analyst for Focus on the Family Action. "Some politicians and members of the media would do well to take note of this — and of similar successes in humans — before they continue touting life-destroying embryonic stem-cell research."
