Mexico City legalized abortion in 2007, but 85 percent of gynecologists in the city's public hospitals have refused to perform abortions over issues of conscience.
Life advocates say the nation's constitution offers legal protection for preborn babies, yet city officials continue to push abortion. Today, Mexico's Supreme Court heard arguments challenging the Mexico City law and is expected to make a decision this week.
Ana Elena Cantu, a city legislator and pro-life leader, said she hopes the court votes to protect innocent lives.
"A person's life has such a great value that we cannot take it," she told The New York Times. "We are not the owners."
