In November, Arkansas voters will decide whether foster kids and prospective adoptees deserve a home with a married mom and dad.
The ballot measure, which garnered 85,389 valid signatures of registered voters, would prohibit unmarried couples from fostering or adopting children. Just 61,974 signatures were needed.
"Arkansas needs to affirm the importance of married mothers and fathers," Jerry Cox, president of the Arkansas Family Council, told The Associated Press. "We need to publicly affirm the gold standard of rearing children whenever we can. The state standard should be as close to that gold standard of married-mom-and-dad homes as possible."
An activist group plans to sue to keep the measure off the ballot.
