The Republican National Convention is in full swing today with a platform that family groups are calling the "strongest ever" on life issues.
The GOP's pro-life plank, which asserts the "inherent dignity and sanctity of all human life," strongly opposes abortion, including partial-birth abortion. It also opposes cloning and assisted suicide, and supports the appointment of judges who protect innocent life.
Karen Cross, political director of the National Right to Life Committee, applauded the platform for taking such a strong stand supporting life at all stages.
"The work of the platform committee makes clear, in no uncertain terms, that the Republican Party is the pro-life party," she said in a statement.
Kelly Shackelford, president of the Free Market Foundation, worked on the platform.
"It not only kept the strong language added under Ronald Reagan, but added new powerful language to go with that," he told Family News in Focus. "This was definitely a move back in the right direction, and sanctity of life has never been lifted up as high as it was in this platform.”
