To hear the media tell it, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is supporting an "anti-gay conference that preach(es) an anti-gospel doctrine."
Of course, nothing could be further from the truth.
When Focus on the Family’s Love Won Out conference travels to Anchorage, Alaska, on Saturday, it will bring a biblical and experiential perspective on the issue of homosexuality.
“We exist to help men and women dissatisfied with living homosexually understand that same-sex attractions can be overcome," said Melissa Fryrear, director of Focus on the Family’s gender and sexuality department. "It is not easy, but it is possible, as evidenced by the thousands of men and women — like me — who have walked this difficult road successfully.”
The Anchorage event, to be held at Abbott Loop Community Church, is Love Won Out's 51st conference. It is being promoted by Palin's home church, Wasilla Bible Church.
Fryrear said some who support special rights for homosexuals are trying to use the church's support of Love Won Out as evidence of “intolerance.”
“There is nothing ‘intolerant’ about our message,” she said. “Our main message is meant for parents who want to learn how to better love their homosexual sons or daughters without compromising their Christian faith.”
Tom Minnery, senior vice president for government and public policy at Focus on the Family Action, said the controversy could have a silver lining.
“It will introduce a lot more people in the Anchorage area to the existence of this conference," he said, "and should boost the awareness of our message.”
