California Marriage Advocates Roll Out TV Campaign

Protect Marriage launched its first television commercial today in support of Proposition 8, which would amend California's Constitution to define marriage as the union between one man and one woman.

The ad, which is airing statewide, counters San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's remarks that gay "marriage" will happen "whether you like it or not."

Frank Schubert, co-campaign manager, said the fight for marriage is far from over.

"Internal polling for both campaigns shows the race is still very much up for grabs," he said. "Now, with the launch of our first television ad, voters finally get to hear the rest of the story. The debate will begin to shift to the very real consequences to California because of the Supreme Court's action" to legalize same-sex "marriage."

On Friday, Google co-founder Sergey Brin went public with his opposition to Prop. 8. A day earlier, Levi Strauss & Co. announced it will co-chair an opposition group alongside Pacific Gas & Electric.

Jenny Tyree, marriage analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said these businesses are ignoring the needs of children.

"Those who oppose Prop. 8 need to consider that changing the definition of marriage is unfair and hurtful to children, who need marriage to give them their best chance at a mother and a father," she said.
