The California Department of Public Health has decided to return the "bride" and "groom" to their rightful places on marriage-license applications.
"Bride" and "groom" had been replaced with "Party A" and "Party B" in June, following the California Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex "marriage." A Placer County couple sued the state last week after their marriage license was denied for writing in "bride" and "groom."
Suanne Buggy, spokeswoman for the state health department, said the change is in response to phone calls received over several months.
“The California Department of Public Health has been reviewing how we can provide those options in a way that is consistent with court rulings on marriage," she told Family News in Focus. "So, the state will begin using new forms … that will include boxes for bride or groom.”
The changes take effect Nov. 17, two weeks after voters will decide on Prop. 8 — a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
