Those who oppose California's marriage-protection amendment, which goes to voters Nov. 4, continue to claim that "Prop. 8 has nothing to do with schools."
Yet one elementary school in the state recently scheduled "gay day" and "ally week" for students as young as 5, according to news reports.
At another California school, first-graders recently took a field trip to the same-sex "wedding" of their lesbian-identified teacher.
The California Teachers Association (CTA) has tried to settle the debate — by giving $1.25 million to defeat Prop. 8.
"Perhaps you're wondering what exactly gay marriage has to do with K-12 public education," The Wall Street Journal wrote in an editorial. "The high school dropout rate is 1-in-4 in California. So you might think the CTA, the state's largest teachers' union, would have other priorities.
"Public school teachers of America, take note. This is your dues money at work."
Kit Greerty, an elementary school teacher in Martinez, Calif., said she's upset her union dues were spent to try to defeat Prop. 8.
"It's 1 million dollars that could be better spent on teacher recruitment, curriculum reform and needs of our special kids," Greerty told KGO-TV in San Francisco.
