Grand Valley State University hosted a discussion Thursday titled "Religion and Homophobia: Spiritual Violence in our Community," but refused to allow Love Won Out a seat at the table — even though the event was sponsored by the Michigan university's Inclusion and Equity Division.
Focus on the Family's Love Won Out ministry exhorts and equips the church to respond in a Christ-like way to the issue of homosexuality.
Love Won Out's Dr. Michael Brown, director of the Coalition of Conscience and president of the FIRE School of Ministry in Concord, N.C., made his presence known at the panel discussion.
"The university did receive 10,000-plus requests asking to have one voice on the other side on the panel, in the name of inclusion and diversity," Brown told others in the audience. "And the university refused. I think that is outright intolerance and exclusion."
Brown said the event was less a panel discussion and more a presentation by Wayne Besen, a gay activist who seeks to discredit Love Won Out and similar ministries.
The Love Won Out conference will take place Saturday at Sunshine Community Church in Grand Rapids. There's still time to register.
