The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) tackled a couple of important family issues – adoption and homosexuality — at its just-concluded annual meeting.
The group passed a resolution asking denominational families to consider adopting or fostering kids.
Dr. Russell Moore, dean of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, authored the proposal.
"I want the world's largest Protestant denomination," he said, "to be part of the movement that God is bringing about all over the world – leading Christians to care for the fatherless."
The organization also decided to break association with a Fort Worth, Texas, church over the issue of homosexuality.
"The Southern Baptist Convention decided years ago to make very clear that only churches who uphold a scriptural understanding of sexuality are in good cooperation with the SBC," Moore explained.
Broadway Baptist Church, he said, had taken a very clear and definitive stand of allowing practicing homosexuals in membership and within leadership.
