Adoption advocates have launched a campaign to counter the message of a new R-rated horror film called Orphan, about a couple that adopts an orphan who terrorizes their lives.
The Warner Bros. movie – to hit the box office July 24 – sends all the wrong messages.
"Movies like Orphan and the messaging surrounding it only serve to perpetuate negative myths and false stereotypes about welcoming an orphan child into one's family." said Kelly Rosati, senior director of the Sanctity of Human Life department at Focus on the Family. "We want to use it as an opportunity to raise awareness of the needs of orphans in our midst and around the world, and what we can do to help minister to their needs."
In response to the film, The Christian Alliance for Orphans launched a campaign and Web site called Orphans Deserve Better.
"We're inviting folks to join us by signing a letter to Warner Bros. asking them to donate a portion of the proceeds to help orphans," said Jedd Medefind, president of the Christian Alliance for Orphans. "We also want people to share their stories and how that has made a difference."
