New FCC Chief Supports Fairness Doctrine

The Federal Communications Commission has named a new chief diversity officer. Mark Lloyd is a former senior fellow at the liberal-leaning Center for American Progress, where he published papers on how to increase a liberal presence on talk radio.

Most pundits agree the Fairness Doctrine, which would require broadcast stations to balance every conservative talk show with a liberal talk show, is too unpopular to bring back at the moment. But as Seton Motley, director of communications at the Media Research Center points out, Lloyd has advocated bringing in similar concepts.

"He wanted activist liberals to use the FCC," he said, "to threaten the licenses of stations with whom they do not agree politically."

A march toward the Fairness Doctrine, by any name, poses a great threat to Christian radio as well. The Bott Radio Network, with stations in 14 states, could be adversely affected, according to Rich Bott, executive vice president.

"We know what they're wanting to do," he said. "It's what they've wanted to do for a long, long time, and that is to quash dissent."
