The Obama administration maintains there will be no public funding of abortion in the health-care reform bill.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius made the surprising claim on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos.
"So you're saying it will go beyond what we've seen so far in the House and explicitly rule out any public funding for abortion?" asked Stephanopoulos.
"That's exactly what the president said," Sebelius responded, "and I think that's what the bill he signs will do."
But the current House version of the health-care bill specifically authorizes the Secretary of HHS to pay for abortions under a public plan.
Focus on the Family Action is encouraging people to get involved in a phone-a-thon this week to tell lawmakers what they think.
Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said pro-lifers can't afford to let up now.
"Until there is definitive language in the health-care bill that excludes abortion funding, it doesn't matter what the White House says," she said. "Citizens need to remain vigilant and tell their representative and senators that they don't want their tax dollars paying for abortions."
It appears many Americans are also wary.
A Zogby International/O'Leary Report Poll shows 59 percent of those who "attend church weekly or more often" support an amendment banning federal tax dollars for abortions.
