Two Arizona legislators, doctors and numerous organizations filed motions Tuesday to intervene in state and federal lawsuits aimed at tearing down new protections for women considering an abortion. The Alliance Defense Fund is representing the group.
The Abortion Consent Act, which requires parental consent for underage girls, and informed consent and a 24-hour waiting period for all women, is set to take effect Sept. 30 — the same day a federal judge will rule in the case.
Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Freedom are challenging the constitutionality of the law. A separate state lawsuit is pending.
"The Abortion Consent Act empowers women to make informed decisions about their health care," said ADF Senior Legal Counsel Steven H. Aden. "These types of protections have been repeatedly upheld and are overwhelmingly supported by the public."
