Mojave Cross Case Goes Before Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments Wednesday in a case involving a 75-year-old war memorial. The ACLU filed suit in 2001 to remove a 7-foot cross in California’s Mojave Desert, and following a court ruling, it was boxed in plywood.

Tim Goeglein, vice president for external relations at Focus on the Family was in the court today and said pictures of the covered cross are compelling.

"It’s not keeping with the spirit of the country," he said, "and it’s not keeping with the spirit of what those veterans wanted."

Kelly Shackelford, chief counsel for Liberty Legal Institute, represents the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He said tearing down the memorial makes no sense.

"If you have to tear down a cross in the middle of 1.6 million acres of desert, then what do you have to do about the Arlington National Cemetery where there’s a 24-foot cross?" he asked.

A Barna Group poll found that 92 percent of Americans want the cross to stand, including 65 percent of liberals.
