Judge Allows Craigslist to Continue Posting Sex Ads

A district judge has thrown out a lawsuit brought by the Cook County, Ill., sheriff against Craigslist over its ads for sex.

Sheriff Tom Dart brought the lawsuit earlier this year, claiming the popular classified ad Web site facilitates prostitution. U.S. District Judge John F. Grady ruled the federal Communications Decency Act protects ads on Craigslist.

Steve Patterson, spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff's Office, said the dismissal is a setback.

"We are looking at our options for appeal right now," he said. "The hope is that Craigslist will be a responsible corporate citizen and do the right thing by permanently removing the 'erotic services' section of its Web site."
