Maine Voters Split on Marriage Ballot Initiative

The battle over same-sex marriage is split down the middle in Maine, according to a survey by Public Policy Polling. Forty-eight percent of respondents said they'll vote "yes" on Question 1, while 48 percent said they'll vote "no."

Question 1 would overturn a gay marriage law passed by the Legislature this year and restore marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The initiative will be on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Bob Emrich, co-chair of Stand for Marriage Maine, said the polls seem to be pretty consistent.

"Considering the fact that the other side has been able to raise and outspend us by such huge margins," he told Baptist Press, "I feel that [the poll] was reasonably good news."
