Maryland's state university regents voted Wednesday to defy a legislative order to regulate porn on campus, claiming it would be impossible to enforce. The order came after portions of an adult film were shown on the University of Maryland campus last spring.
Neal McCluskey, associate director of the Center for Educational Freedom with the Cato Institute, said you can expect colleges to play the "academic freedom" card.
"The taxpayers of Maryland have an equally legitimate concern," he said, "that it appears that the university was allowing students to show pornography just for the sake of showing pornography and for entertainment."
Without a clear policy against pornography, family leaders say, the university is essentially contributing to the sexual harm of students.
State Sen. Andrew Harris, Dist. 7, pushed for the order and got roughed up in the media.
"It's possible that he might not want to revisit it," McCluskey said.
