Atheist Sign Prompts Legal Battle

William Kelly filed a lawsuit in a federal court on Jan. 28 against Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White for his approval of an atheist sign at the state Capitol.

The Freedom from Religion "Winter Solstice" sign read, in part, "Religion is just myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."

Kelly's attorney, Mark Roth of Orum & Roth, explained that the sign violates the U.S. Constitution's Establishment Clause.

Kelly said the sign, placed next to a nativity scene and a Christmas tree, promotes hate speech against all religious people.

"It is this attitude of hate," he said, "that has enabled the stripping of religion, tradition and history from our holidays, our history books and our culture in general."
