It appears the Democrats will take control of the U.S. House. Dems look to pick up 15 seats today, enough to take control when Congress is seated in January, CNN projected.
Key races where Democrats gained seats included Ohio's 18th Congressional District, where it's projected Democrat Zack Space will defeat Republican Joy Padgett for the seat formerly held by GOP Rep. Bob Ney.
Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who appears set to be the next speaker of the House, thanked voters, whom she said had sent a message to the administration.
"On behalf of the House Democrats and everyone who cares about a better future for our children, I'm here to thank each and every one of you for bringing us to where we are now tonight -- on the brink of a great Democratic victory," Pelosi told a cheering crowd.
Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council said the change is a disappointment for pro-family conservatives.
"I think it is a setback for this administration," Perkins told CitizenLink. "But it looks like they will hang onto the Senate, so we'll have split-government gridlock in Washington."
Perkins said Senate control, which is still up in the air, will be important for filling a possible next vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court. Still undecided is Virginia's Senate race, in which incumbent Republican George Allen is neck-and-neck with Democrat James Webb.
