S.D. Abortion Ban Projected to Lose

CNN is predicting that South Dakotans will reject Referred Law 6, 55 percent to 45 percent -- that's the referendum on the state’s abortion ban passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Mike Rounds in March.

The measure outlaws all abortions except those needed to preserve the life of the mother. But Leslee Unruh, chairwoman of Vote Yes for Life, is still optimistic about the initiative's chances.

"Our strength is going to be in the absentee ballots, and it's going to be awhile before we know about them," she told CitizenLink. "We’re just going to watch and wait. We know there are a lot of women who have stepped up -- who have told their stories during this campaign. We're celebrating that this is the first time that there has been legislation to ban abortion."
