Dist. 6
Republican: Peter Roskam: 51%
Democrat: Tammy Duckworth:49%
Precincts Reporting: 94%
Roskam, a state senator, was unopposed in the primary. Duckworth, a Blackhawk pilot, was nominated with 44 percent in a three-way primary.
Why we're watching: The suburban Chicago seat has been held by retiring Republican Rep. Henry Hyde, a 32-year House veteran who spearheaded the Clinton impeachment proceedings and championed pro-life legislation. Duckworth is a former Army captain who lost her legs in combat in Iraq. Duckworth is endorsed by Emily's List, a pro-abortion organization while Roskam was endorsed by Congressman Henry Hyde.
Dist. 8
Republican: David McSweeney: 44%
Democrat: Melissa Bean: 51%
Precincts Reporting: 95%
McSweeney, an investment banker, was nominated with 43 percent in a six-way primary. Elected in 2004, Bean, who was unopposed in the primary, is seeking a second term.
Why we're watching: Endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice America, Bean voted against Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act, and in favor of requiring military hospitals to perform abortions. She also voted against protecting 10 Commandments display and against the Marriage Protection Amendment. Bean is on Emily's List.
In the opposite corner, McSweeney has a “Family & Freedom” platform and supports a constitutional amendment protecting traditional marriage.
