Dist. 1
Republican: Mike Whalen: 43%
Democrat: Bruce Braley: 55%
Precincts Reporting: 100%
Whalen, a businessman, was nominated with 48 percent in a three-way primary. Braley, former president of the Iowa Trial Lawyers Association, was nominated with 37 percent in a four-way primary.
Why we're watching: Braley and Whalen are engaged in one of most hotly contested congressional races in the country. The winner will replace Jim Nussle, the Republican candidate for governor, and could play a determining role in majority control of the U.S. House of Representatives, which has been under Republican control since 1994. Political bloggers say the two candidates agree on almost nothing.
Dist. 3
Republican: Jeff Lamberti: 47%
Democrat: Leonard Boswell: 52%
Precincts Reporting: 100%
Lamberti, current co-president of the state Senate, was unopposed in the primary. Elected in 1996, Boswell, who was unopposed in the primary, is seeking a sixth term.
Why we're watching: Lamberti who is a self-described "strong fiscal and social conservative," was named 2002 Friend of the Family by Christian Coalition of Iowa. Boswell has not scored higher than 25 percent from National Right to Life Committee -- he voted against Unborn Victims of Violence Act. He also voted against the Marriage Protection Amendment.
