Elected to the U.S. House in 1987, Cardin says his foremost passion in Congress is improving the health-care system. Steele, who is African-American, is running in a state with the highest percentage of African-Americans outside of the Deep South.
Why we're watching: The retirement of Democratic Sen. Paul Sarbanes leaves this Senate seat up for grabs, and the candidates vying for it are worlds apart on pro-family issues. Rep. Cardin has voted 100 percent of the time with pro-abortion groups NARAL and Planned Parenthood, and he voted against the Marriage Protection Amendment. Lt. Gov. Steele has consistently backed pro-life policies and supports the protecting marriage from redefinition.
