Republican: Thomas Kean Jr.: 45%
Democrat: Robert Menendez: 53%
Precincts Reporting: 99%

Sen. Menendez, a Democrat appointed by newly elected Gov. Jon Corzine in January 2006 to fill Corzine’s former Senate seat, is seeking his first full term. Tom Kean, Jr., is the son of the former governor and a state senator.

Why we're watching: New Jersey has not had a Republican senator since 1982 – and in 1982 the seat was held by a Republican for less than a year.  Republicans believe 2006 is the year to change that history, but Sen. Menendez will not go down without a fight and Kean’s moderate positions leave conservatives lukewarm.
