Republican: George Allen: 49%
Democrat: James Webb: 50%
Precincts Reporting: 99%

Webb, a former secretary of the Navy, was nominated with 53 percent in a two-way primary. First elected in 2000; Seeking second full term; Allen was unopposed in the primary.

Why we're watching: Sen. George Allen's Senate seat has turned out to be a hotly contested battle in 2006.  Allen, a former governor and assumed presidential hopeful, is challenged by James Webb, a former secretary of the Navy.  The candidates differ significantly on the War on Terror -- Allen is supportive; Webb is opposed  -- and on abortion -- Allen is pro-life; Webb is pro-abortion.
