Joseph Lieberman has easily won his battle for re-election to the U.S. Senate. Lieberman ran as an independent, after losing a close primary to Democrat Ned Lamont in August, but says he will vote with the Democrats.
Both Lamont and Lieberman are liberal on most social issues, including abortion, embryonic stem-cell research, gay marriage. Lieberman scores a perfect 100 on NARAL Pro-Choice America’s rankings. Their differences are primarily over the war in Iraq and Bush’s war on terrorism, which Lieberman supports and Lamont fiercely opposes. Lamont was the darling of a movement of liberal bloggers who crowed loudly about their alleged ability to influence the very close Lamont-Lieberman primary, which ousted the incumbent in a shocker.
Republican Schlesinger was more conservative on social issues, including support for parental-involvement laws for minors seeking abortion, but he fared poorly in liberal Connecticut.
