Gay Students Perform Mock Marriage Ceremonies in School Cafeteria

by Josh Montez

A petition asking the government to end discrimination against same-sex marriage was also in the mix.

The event dubbed ‘Freedom to Marry’ kicked off as nearly 20 gay couples lined up in the Glendale, California High School cafeteria to unite in a mock holy matrimony. Then, for a mere $5 fee, partners received a counterfeit marriage certificate and went on their way. Glendale resident, George Taylorson, is appalled the school would allow such a controversial event to occur.

“To encourage this type of lifestyle with kids that are 13, 14 on up; it just totally angers me and disturbs me. The schools have a big enough problem as it is just educating the kids without getting involved into such a highly sensitive area.”

The goal of the ceremonies, sponsored by an openly gay-teacher and the Glendale Gay Straight Alliance, was to mock marriage. Lynne Fishel with the California Family Council isn’t surprised by this tactic.

“They are a pretty organized group throughout California high schools. And it’s just kind of an in-your-face event, obviously for those of us that want to protect traditional marriage.”

California-based legal group, the Pacific Justice Institute, has written a warning letter to the principal of Glendale High School, urging him to act in the best interest of all students. No comment from the school district.
