Imagine you’re the pastor of a church and you’re looking for a youth pastor. One of the applicants is an openly gay man. Congressman Roy Blunt of Missouri says if ENDA is passed, you might not be able to exclude your gay candidate from the pack.
“Not being able to hire people based on their agreement with your sense of the principles and values of the institution would be devastating.”
Proponents of the bill claim there is a religious exemption. Blunt says that’s a sham.
“The court has to decide if your purpose is sufficiently religious enough in character. Are you a church? Do you do other things that might not be? Do you have a daycare center?”
And there’s nothing to stop a pro-gay Congress from removing the exemption at a later date. Ashley Horne of Focus on the Family Action says the gay lobby is after an even bigger goal.
“The real agenda behind the innocuously named Employment Nondiscrimination Act is a push to enshrine homosexuality and transgenderism into national policy.”
Bill sponsors aren’t giving their colleagues, or you, much of a chance to respond to the legislation.
“ENDA has been fast-tracked in Congress. Barney Frank is trying to push this bill through and constituents haven’t had a chance to weigh in. So, we really need to get the word out.”
A vote in the House could come as early as next week. For more information, go to Citizenlink.com and click on the ‘action center.’ There you’ll be able to find contact information for your congressman.
