Pro-gay curriculum creeps into D.C. schools

by Josh Montez

The Washington D.C. Board of Education will vote next month on proposed guidelines for junior high and high school sex-education classes. The curriculum is very gay-friendly, but you'd never know it from the name.

The 43-pages of new guidelines called “Health Learning Standards” wants sixth-graders to know that “people, regardless of sexual orientation, have sexual feelings.” And eighth graders should be taught about sexual orientation “using correct terminology.”  Candi Cushman at Focus on the Family Action implores parents not to be fooled.

“Parents need to be aware of the fact that in many school districts across the nation, the promotion of homosexuality is coming in stealthily under titles like ‘health learning standards’ or ‘family life education.’”

Randy Thomas with Exodus International says the new ‘standards’ appear to push a dangerously one-sided perspective of homosexuality.

“They only present homosexuality as something positive whereas, as a former homosexual, I know what its like. And it’s not all positive; it’s not all perfect and they don’t represent people like me, who chose a different way to deal with their same-sex attraction.”

The guidelines aren’t in place yet, and D.C. parents still have time to weigh in.  Michelle Turner with Citizens for Responsible Curriculum says that hasn’t been the case in Maryland.

“Unlike the Montgomery County Board of Education which tried very hard to squelch public comment and did not hold a public hearing.”

She urges parents everywhere to take advantage of all public hearings on similar new ‘standards.’
