Video Store Carries Family Friendly Name

by Terry Phillips

A chain of video rental locations called Family Video Stores appears to be peddling pornography despite its family-friendly name.

It’s the old story of “what’s in a name?”  The town of Auburn, New York, along with maybe 450 other towns in America, is asking itself that question after being faced with an adult video store that goes by the name of Family Video Store. Daniel Weiss is an analyst at Focus on the Family Action.

“This is a tactic we see in the porn industry. You have a name like Family Video where people might feel safe walking in and instead you have a video store that rents pornography.”

The real issue here is that the company is making money while fooling the public with its brand name. Patrick Trueman is an attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund.

“This is unfortunate that a video store with the name of Family Video would cater to the audience seeking pornography. This chain of stores along with several others are looking to expand their audience.

In Auburn, New York the city is taking Familyi Video to court. And it's suing using a zoning ordinance that's been on the books for ten years. Trueman says there is a lesson there for communities everywhere.

"If they look at their ordinances as they were set up, sometimes a decade ago, they will learn that these shops were prohibited where thy are currently located."

So what is needed may already be in place. Weiss says a city like Auburn can close down such businesses.

"What this shows is that people can take a stand and can have success against these types of businesses.

Many people may not know that porn is being rented behind a store front as innocuous as Family Video but in Auburn the purveyors are due in court.
