The Spiderwick Chronicles picked up a Dove Foundation “Family Approved” seal. While it does not guarantee the new release will be a box office hit, CEO Dick Rolfe says it tells families that the movie is safe.
“We’re looking at content issues, and so we’re looking at sex, language, violence, nudity, drug and alcohol use, and the occult. Those are the six criteria against which we judge a film.”
Because of the content, the movie has a much better chance of success. Ted Baehr of Movieguide says Hollywood is listening to the money, even if the critics are not.
“If you’re looking at the Academy Award winners when they were nominated, they averaged about 30 million dollars at the box office. Our winners were averaging 300 million dollars.”
Baehr says the way to keep the family friendly fare coming is what he calls a boycott; only buying tickets to movies that appeal to families. Hollywood listens to everyone, but young people are particularly important.
“If we want Hollywood to stop exploiting these other markets, the most powerful person in Hollywood is the 12 – 24 year olds that goes to movies.”
And with every ticket they buy those young people are making sure you continue to have a choice that will not offend.
