The new law in “the Cornhusker State” prohibits state money from being used to create and destroy human life for cloning experiments. Dave Bydalek with Family First says the legislation was prompted by the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s desire to be part of the brave new world of biotechnology.
“It wanted to move toward a situation where they could clone embryos for research purposes. Knowing that was the end game, we’ve been working on this six years.”
Julie Schmit-Albin of Nebraska Right to Life says the legislature was unanimous in drawing a line in the sand to keep taxpayer dollars from being used to pay for human cloning.
“LB 606 prohibits our state funded University of Nebraska Medical Center from creating new human embryos and from destroying them; effectively banning cloning.”
Bydalek says the hard work paid off.
“It’s a testament of sticking to your guns. The pro-life community stuck together and we wouldn’t compromise on core principles and I think God really honored our efforts here.”
Dawn Vargo of Focus on the Family Action says Nebraska proves the grassroots have power.
“Despite some resistance along the way, the pro-life community in Nebraska gave us an excellent example of how to stand strong and fight for core principles here.”
Nebraska’s cloning ban passed the Senate 47-0.
