The polygamist sect is a splinter group called Fundamental Latter-Day Saints. They are known for 19th-century style living and arranging multiple marriages to teenage girls. Child Protective Services removed all the women and children they thought would be in danger. Silas Politte a minister at the First Baptist of Eldorado says his church was asked to be a temporary shelter for these people in need.
“I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to help them again, but I hope and pray that because of the love that they have been shown from us to this point that they will know that we’ll always be there to help them.”
By providing cots, cribs, blankets, food and transportation over a two-day period, the church was able to put the displaced women and children at ease. Flora Jessop with Child Protection Project is pleased the local church and town took the cry for help seriously.
“My advice to them is to continue showing the good works that they have shown and it’s very important that these children see a gentle, caring side to the outsiders.”
Hiram Sasser with Liberty Legal Institute says this local church went above and beyond.
“I think it’s great that the body of believers are banding together to help these kids, these women, with broken lives, to help restore them spiritually and physically.”
He thinks every church should be willing to open its doors to help people recover their lives such as this small-town church did.
