Those unhappy with the Bisbee school board action include Peter Gentala General Counsel for the Center for Arizona Policy.
“This is one of the most shocking things I’ve seen. Because educators of all people should know that young people respond to expectations.”
And what are the school board’s expectations?
"And in this case, you have an entire school board with only one dissenting vote saying that they expect young people in the Bisbee school district to be sexually active on prom night.”
Linda Klepacki, analyst for sexual health with Focus on the Family says the school board should not expect that kind of student behavior.
“Don’t assume and don’t give the impression that every one of those teenagers is expected have sex that night.
“Parents have a right to give their kah kids contraceptives and to talk with them about it, if they feel that that’s something that’s necessary for those kids.”
Gentala says parents can bring about positive change.
“You know I honestly think that the most important thing right now would be to hold the school board accountable, particularly the four members who voted “yes” for this."
Gentala says other than a few letters to the editor, there wasn’t much uproar in Bisbee. One letter to the editor encouraged local parents to demand a reversal of the school board decision.
