On at least two previous occasions other leaders have sent letters asking that Marriott stop peddling porn. This letter was written by Don Wildmon of the American Family Association.
“We’re asking Marriott to discontinue showing the in-room porn movies. Very simple. It’s not a big request.”
The letter asks that the process start with a meeting between Marriott and pro-family representatives. Wildmon says getting rid of the porn will cost money, but the mega-chain can handle it.
“It is an economic issue for Marriott," says Wildmon. "They do get millions of dollars from the porn movies. But they’re not a company that’s hurting financially.”
In fact, in the past Marriott has admitted they have pornography available in-room is because it adds to the bottom line. Daniel Weiss is with Focus on the Family Action.
“For a company that wants families to stay in their properties, that is going for family business, there’s a pretty big disconnect there.”
The letter was signed by forty-seven pro-family leaders including Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council and Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family.
Weiss says that "the people in that letter are trying to talk to Marriott. They’re trying to engage in a dialogue, and that’s the first part of any action.”
He says it’s a great way to keep the pressure on companies which profit from material that destroys individuals and families.
