Teens and Cell-Phones

by Karen Johnson

Teens are starting to communicate by using their cell phones as attraction devices, snapping nude photos and sharing them on-line.

Detective Brian Marvin of the FBI Cyber Crime Task Force of Central Ohio says investigations into the teen behavior is shocking.

“Kind of like an exhibition on-line sometimes.”

Ohio-based Citizens For Community Values Director Barry Sheets says this new perversion in tech use should prompt parents to remember their role in kid’s lives.

“We’re talking about children regardless of whether they’re 12 years old or 17 years old, they’re still children who need that parental direction.

He adds media’s power in teens’ lives pushing sexual images as normal adolescence makes a hands-on approach by parents vital.

“You wouldn’t hand your kids a power saw so why hand them such a powerful tool like the internet.”

Candice Kelsey uses her teaching position at a private high school in California to support parents. She suggests finding your teen in this predicament can be avoided by going with your child to sites like My Space and Facebook.

“Because they are going to be on-line for the rest of their lives.”

Hearing the chatter on her high school campus about the embarrassing images bothers 17 year old Chelsea Coe.

“Maybe it is a good idea to take phones away at night and maybe it is a good idea to keep in contact with your children.”

Plus, most states have laws making porn created by children equal to adult created content and the penalty is being charged with a felony offense.
