Many parents think kids understand their sexuality from a biblical perspective, but Linda Klepacki, an analyst with Focus on the Family Action, says, given today’s culture, that assumption needs reconsideration.
“They’re especially being affected by media on the internet, there are many kids exposed to pornography or pornographic type stories, and they’re being exposed to topics that we never dreamed of when we were growing up.”
Even in homes where traditional values are enforced, Klepacki says talk about what society says and the reality of teens’ changing hormones can be scary. One problem may lie with Mom or Dad.
“Many parents tell me that they don’t even know their anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system to pass on to their children, much less other sexual topics.”
You can help calm your nerves by using scripture, even when chatting with kids in the toddler phase. That teaching-tool has worked for Joe Cuchiara and his wife, who have raised three teenage boys.
“We do go to scripture continually to say, ‘Hey guys, integrity is important, character is important.’”
Genesis, the Bible’s first book, is full of talking points that show kids the difference between culture’s message and God’s moral standard. More resources can be found on our Focus on the Family sponsored website, PureIntimacy.org.
