California Education Bill Would Mandate Schools Endorse Homosexuality

by Mona Passignano, State Issues Analyst

Action is needed to stop this biased bill in the California Senate.

Senate Bill 1437 has passed from the  California Senate Judiciary Committee and can at any moment be voted on by the  whole Senate. If signed into law, it would force all public school teachers to present to students a one-sided message about homosexuality, bisexuality and transgender issues.

The bill would ban lessons, discussions and activities that reflect adversely upon one's sexual orientation ,  which would end any open discussion about the issue of homosexuality in public classrooms and effectively silence the Christian voice on the issue.

To compound this bias, the bill calls for all facets of education to be stripped of any  non-endorsing messages about homosexuality.

Amendments made to the bill in late March also require social science lesson plans to include the contributions homosexuals, bisexuals and transgenders have made to society.

According to the California Family Council, "homosexuality would be presented as a positive, accepted norm without any of the moral or health concerns expressed by many parents and faith groups.  Stereotypical gender and traditional family roles would no longer be discussed in public schools, and everything – except the Christian viewpoint – would be protected under the guise of tolerance."

TAKE ACTION
SB 1437 is currently in the Senate but if passed, it will go to the Assembly for a vote. If you are a California resident, please contact your state legislators today and urge them to oppose SB 1437 – which would force public schools to teach children as young as kindergarten age that homosexuality is normal and should be celebrated by schoolchildren and American society.
