Focus Action Decries Mass. Marriage Vote

Colorado Springs, Colo. –– Focus on the Family Action Senior Director of Issue Analysis Carrie Gordon Earll today issued the following statement in response to the Massachusetts Legislature killing the state marriage amendment, which would have reversed the 2003 Goodridge ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in that state:

"Today, Massachusetts lawmakers put voters on notice that their right to self-government is coming to an end. By refusing to allow the people to protect and restore the definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman, the legislators who changed their votes have utterly betrayed the men and women who sent them to the state House to represent them.

"In the very cradle of American liberty and democracy, elected officials have rejected the most basic principles of democratic government and the will of the people who signed a record number of petitions to begin this amendment process. Our system of government demands nothing less than our representatives voting on principle, rather than on political opportunism and arm-twisting."
