COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Focus on the Family Action Judicial Issues Analyst Bruce Hausknecht released the following statement today in response to the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court:
"Judge Sotomayor’s statements during her confirmation hearings showed a marked departure from the writings, speeches and affiliations she had made over the last 30 years. At the hearings, Judge Sotomayor portrayed herself as a strict constructionist who would look to the original understanding of a constitutional provision rather than read new meanings into it, and as a supporter of Justice Scalia's criticism of the use of foreign law to interpret our own law. She also rejected the ‘empathy’ standard by which she was supposedly selected.
"Because this nomination to the Supreme Court is so critical to our nation's continuing adherence to its Constitution and laws, we hope that Judge Sotomayor serves as she pledged to during her testimony."
