It was in the late '70s that I found Dr. Dobson's radio program as I was taking my morning walk. I was struggling with a narcissistic, abusive husband with ADD and with our 13-year-old son who was ODD (oppositional defiant disorder) and had learning disabilities. Our home was a battlefield. I was an emotional wreck and stayed confused and depressed much of the time. My own issues from an abusive and troubled childhood made me ill-equipped to handle my situation. I was totally overwhelmed.
So, it was a truly a blessing the day I found Dr. Dobson's program. He became the male role model in my life: a man I could esteem, respect and trust. I was particularly drawn to the religious aspect of his teaching. Every day, I would eagerly look forward to spending 30 minutes listening to his program and learning everything I could about how to handle life's problems.
Through the years, I have listened intently to his programs, bought his books, taped his shows and read his monthly publication. His teachings on ADD, parenting, tough love, menopause, sex addiction, fathers and daughters, differences in men and women, marriage, depression, self-esteem, homosexuality, etc. have been a source of enlightenment, encouragement and instruction.
My one son is grown now, married with two daughters, and preaches when needed. I have remained married for over 40 years and have grown spiritually even in adversity.
I'm happy to have an opportunity to say, "Thank you, Dr. Dobson for being the person that you are and for being there for me all these years when I've needed guidance so desperately. You have truly had an impact for good in my life, and I can't imagine having taken this journey without you."
