I've been married for 22 years. At the beginning of our marriage, I heard a broadcast from James Dobson about marriage. They discussed something that changed my life, and drastically changed my husband's life: that you could not expect your spouse to make you happy.
This was a bit shocking to me, but I realized through their conversation that I was expecting my husband to make me happy, and of course, he was doomed to fail. The Lord spoke to my heart and made me realize He is the Source of my happiness.
The second thing they discussed was women needing friends who are women. We like to talk things over and in great detail; it makes us feel better. I had expected my husband to be my husband, friend, best friend, lover, and to bring me happiness.
Now, God is my Source of happiness, I have a best friend, and I try to make my spouse happy instead of having the "Give me! Give me! Give me!" mentality.
My thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ for this broadcast, to Dr. James Dobson and to all the staff that makes Focus on the Family possible. I thank God for His servants who also send donations to this ministry.
